It’s vital that you carry out a fire alarm test weekly on your premises, whether business or residential. It would typically be conducted by a designated ‘responsible person’.
However, some people may not feel confident enough to put their fire alarm system in test mode and conduct the test, but in the event of a fire, it is so important that the system is working properly.
With knowledge, experience and the following tips, you’ll be confident enough to test your fire alarms like a pro.
1. Do put the system “in test” (if you have fire alarm monitoring)
If your system is monitored, meaning it has an emergency response set up if the alarm is activated, be sure to notify your ARC (Alarm Receiving Centre) to let them know that a test is going to be conducted. After the test, and don’t forget to turn off the test mode, ask the ARC for a report to make sure they received notice of the alarm.
2. Do check that the panel has registered the correct zone
Every manual call point (MCP) you test will be registered to a specific zone of the building. If you trigger an MCP for the test when you go to deactivate it at the control panel, make sure it displays the correct zone.
3. Do keep a record of weekly testing in your logbook
If your building receives a spot check from the fire service, they will want to look at your logbook to check that there is evidence of weekly testing. If you go to lengths to regularly and thoroughly test your fire alarm, but do not record it, you will be in breach of legal compliance as there’s nothing to demonstrate you’ve actually done it.
4. Do carry out your weekly testing during normal working hours
Carry out the test during normal working hours. The alarms should sound, which not only gives you an indication of it functioning properly but will remind the residents of the building what the fire alarm sounds like. That way, if it goes off outside of your usual testing time slot, they will know it is not a test and potentially a fire.
5. Do report any issues to your fire alarm maintenance provider
If there are any faults, you need to report them as soon as humanly possible. Ignoring any potential faults could have devastating consequences.
