Iconic toy retail chain Toys ‘R’ Us is to return to the UK high street in 2022 with a brand new high street store, four years after closing the doors of all its 100 UK branches after falling into administration.
The Metro reports that the owner of the toy store brand, WHP Global has entered into an agreement with Toys ‘R’ Us Australia to lead the revival of the store in the UK. Online sales will begin within the ‘next several months’ and will be initially operating out of Australia.
UK teams, offices and logistics will be set up from 2022 with ‘physical retail’ as well as online shopping.
The Toys ‘R’ Us brand launched in the UK in 2017, but following the bankruptcy of the US parent company in 2017, the UK arm of the business went into administration in 2018, with thousands of workers losing their jobs. Despite the collapse in the UK, the chain continued to trade in 900 stores across 25 countries.
In March this year, WHP Global acquired a controlling interest in Tru Kids, the parent company of the Toys ‘R’ Us and Babies ‘R’ Us brands.
Yehuda Shmidman, the chairman of WHP Global and Toys ‘R’ Us, said: “Toys ‘R’ Us today is a vibrant business with over 900 stores and e-commerce sites across 25-plus countries generating over US$2 billion a year in sales and growing, especially with the new launches underway for both the US and UK markets.”
